Wonder no longer; here they are. The whimsical bacteria in this micrograph are from the bacterial family Spirochaetaceae; I have listed them below and the same information can be found below the appropriate panels in the digitized print posted here. Enjoy; show your friends. The bugs: Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne disease of humans (currently receiving much press). Borrelia hermsii, one of a related group of species that cause relapsing fever, another disease transmitted by ticks (lice for Borrelia recurrentis). Serpulina hyodysenteriae, the spirochete that causes swine dysentery, a major economic problem in pig-producing areas. Treponema pallidum, the organism that causes syphilis; great cocktail party conversation piece (at least as good as swine dysentery).
